GreenIron is ready to challenge the inconvenient truth
Spring 2021 – IEA (International Energy Agency) – presented a roadmap for the global energy sector: Net Zero by 2050. In the solid and comprehensive publication, the following is stated, among other things:
Today, fossil fuels account for 80 percent of the energy use globally. In order to face the 1.5C warming target, the short-term goal is to reduce the use of fossil sources by 50 percent by 2030. In the long-term perspective, by 2050 the latest, coal consumption must be reduced by 90 percent, oil by 75 percent and gas by 55 percent.
Unfortunately the report disappointingly reveals that governments around the world, still are planning on producing more than double the fossil fuels. If it becomes a reality, it is, of course, impossible to limit global warming to 1,5 degrees. This means we have a narrow and challenging pathway ahead of us, but it’s still achievable if both governments and enterprises all over the world take bold and immediate action.
With our cutting-edge technology, GreenIron is fully prepared, to take responsibility to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the production of iron, steel and non-ferrous metals. This sector accounts for no less than about 8% of the global greenhouse gas emissions.
GreenIron supports the EU’s dream of the green deal
In July 2021, the European Commission adopted a series of legislative proposals, setting out how it intends to become the world´s first climate neutral continent by 2050. With the 2030 Climate Target Plan, the EU Commission proposes to raise the EU’s ambition on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to at least 55% below 1990 levels by 2030. It is also in line with the Paris Agreement objective, to keep the global temperature increase to well below 2°C and pursue efforts to keep it to 1.5°C.
The package of proposals aims at providing a coherent and balanced framework for reaching the EU’s climate objectives. At GreenIron, we especially support the following initiatives:
- Maintaining and strengthening innovation and competitiveness of EU industry. The purpose is to ensure leading the way in transitioning to a green and resilient economy. We obviously hope for great support for carbon dioxide-free production of iron, steel and non-ferrous metals. This sector accounts for no less than 8% of the global greenhouse gas emissions.
- Determining the future role of carbon pricing, which will hopefully lead to a continued increase in the CO2 price of the EU carbon market. The positive consequence of sending a strong decarbonisation signal, is that it will pave the way for sustainable investing. Especially to the region’s most highly polluting industries, not least the steel and mining industry.
GreenIron’s mission is to create societal value for the world
Due to the fact that the countries of the world must make a rapid transition to become fossil-free, it opens up enormous sustainable business opportunities for innovative companies and start ups. Swedish industry has unique opportunities to enhance its competitiveness by leading this transition. By exporting green innovations and technologies, this will facilitate for other countries achieve their sustainability goals. Obviously, it is positive for the Swedish economy, that new jobs are created and enhances people’s quality of life and well-being. But, above all this, it strengthens Sweden’s reputation, as a country that actively takes responsibility for slowing down climate change.
Moreover, Sweden aims to become the world’s first fossil-free welfare state, reaching net zero emissions by 2045 at the latest, which responds directly to SDG 13. To succeed in fulfilling this challenging ambition, Fossil Free Sweden was founded by the Swedish Government ahead of UN’s climate conference in Paris in 2015. The organization works to identify obstacles and see opportunities, in order to accelerate the transition. With a unique role between the business sector and politics, Fossil Free Sweden produces policy proposals to help companies, industries, municipalities and regions reduce their emissions.
Reaching a fossil free society demands broad cooperation and a clear leadership from the business sector. At GreenIron, we strongly believe in the importance of cooperating between companies, between politics and companies, within and between different industries, between countries and between regions, is the cornerstone of a successful transition. We are convinced that the main contribution of the responsible companies to society, and most important legacy, is research and development of modern, sustainable products and services. In Sweden, we created folkhemmet (the people´s home). Ikea furnished it. Electrolux has kept it clean. Spotify has set the tone. And H&M equipped us.
GreenIron’s, mission is to carry on this proud, Swedish tradition, but we raise our sights even further. Our vision is to focus on creating long-term societal value. Not just for Sweden. But for the whole world. And for future generations.
